Beauty and mystery of mathematics featured in two film screenings in March at IUPUI

INDIANAPOLIS – The beauty and mystery of mathematics will be at the forefront of two films set to screen at Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) on March 1 and 2.

This free film series, a special production sponsored by the IUPUI Department of Mathematics and Mathematics club, will feature refreshments and the chance to meet the filmmaker. The director of both films, Ekaterina Eremenko will be flying in from Berlin, Germany, to lead a Q&A discussion following each screening.  Still from The Discrete Charm of Geometry

Premiering for the first time in the United States, The Discrete Charm of Geometry, will be shown at 6:30-9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1, in the Lower Theater of the IUPUI Campus Center. This film features IUPUI School of Science Distinguished Professor Alexander Its and showcases the excitement of discovery, hope and disappointment for a team of mathematicians working together on a big project.

Registration begins at 6:15 p.m. and pizza and refreshments will be served at 6:30 p.m. The screening will begin with a short introduction at 7 p.m., followed by a Q&A immediately after the film. Film runtime: 66 minutes.

The second screening, Colors of Math, will take place from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2, in the Lower Theater of the IUPUI Campus Center. This critically acclaimed film breaks down the abstractness of mathematics into many different everyday “languages” like sound, color, smell and touch. The Moscow International Film Festival praised the film, saying, “Completely true to its title, [Colors of Math] bypasses the brain and immediately reaches all senses."

Registration begins at 5:15 p.m. and pizza and refreshments will be served at 5:30 p.m. The screening will begin with a short introduction at 6 p.m., followed by a Q&A immediately after the film. Film runtime: 60 minutes.
